YouTube was created in February 2005 by 3 former PayPal employees and sold to Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion.
The video hosting site allows users to upload and share videos and also to comment and rate other videos. Much of the material on the site has been uploaded by individuals, however, media cooperations and other organisations also offer some of their material on the site.
YouTube is an example of Web 2.0 because it allows anyone, anywhere to upload videos of their choice to the internet. Web 2.0 is further exemplified in the comment and rate features.
YouTube is predominantly used by younger generations as they are more technologically aware and more likely to find entertainment in watching videos online in this way. YouTube content is therefore often specifically targeted towards this demographic.
